10.12.2008 - Great new upgrades
PSC3 – battery block measurement brings peace of mind

A new battery block measurement has been announced for the PSC3 controller. The new option enhances system reliability by locating potential battery problems at an early stage.

“The module spots any abnormal voltage differences within the batteries and alerts the user”, explains Product Manager Matti Heikkilä. “Our aim is to make our customers life as carefree as possible. We like the new feature ourselves and we believe you will love it too.”

2.7 kW rectifier updated for network maintenance

The new entry our popular 2.7 kW rectifier series incorporates a CAN interface. Coupled with a PSC controller this means easier network maintenance and less trips onsite.

“We are talking about a whole new degree of simplicity”, confirms Global Product Manager, Hans-Peter Glauser. “Network maintenance is something to appreciate especially in areas where monsoons, tropical storms, cold winters or other extreme conditions might make it difficult to reach the site.”

“This is not only more convenient, but also saves our customers money.”

Installation has been made easy as the CAN interface is plug-and-play.

“I think we will all be happy to get our site up-and-running without the tedious hassle of addressing and other setup intricacies”, Glauser says.

The new 2.7 kW rectifier continues the Delta tradition of diminutive size combined with impressive power density; in this case 34W/inch3. The compact size allows installation in space critical applications like street side broadband and tower wireless base installations.

NH UPS – new option for uninterrupted power

NH UPS is a new, easily upgradable solution with 20 kW power modules. NH can be installed parallel, securing power up to 160 kVa. In normal mode the system runs at 94% efficiency, and in ECO mode the number goes up to 97%.

“Expandability and adaptability are the key here”, says UPS Product Manager Nico Leibenguth. “We want to make our customers’ life easier, and NH UPS does just that.”

Delta have paid attention to the requirement of easy maintenance and short mean time to recovery. With NH UPS a defective module can be changed to a new one with the system in operation. With a large number of interface options NH can be easily looped to networked management.

“With our comprehensive UPS management software integrated control of the system and critical load is easy”, Leibenguth reflects. “Just the way our customers have said they want it.”

11.09.2008 - New software out now!
Grab your laptop and connect the cable. You will be up and running in no time at all.

Delta have released the new software version for the PSC3 controller. The new version comes with DHCP support, which stands for easy communication between your laptop and the controller.

All you need to do is activate the DHCP and write the IP address to your web browser’s URL field. Bookmark the URL and it cannot be easier: no drivers or special software are needed, and no manual tweaks need to be performed.

“No compatibility issues, no conflicts between hardware and software,” says Mr. Matti Heikkilä, Product Manager at Energy Solutions.

A number of controller parameters can now also be modified via SNMP, the functionality of which has been improved in the new software version.

“Alarm messages, the TRAPs, are now more detailed and informative. It’s much easier to integrate the power system with the network management system.”

Constant development is a part of the Delta strategy. We want to be the forerunner in introducing solutions that make our customers’ life easier.

“Some may consider it a worn-out phrase, but we really are intent on providing added value for our customers, now and in the future”, Heikkilä says.
11.09.2008 - Enhanced power system control
Let’s face it, not everywhere on the globe is utility power quality good enough,” states B. Madhu Babu, Product Manager for Delta Energy Systems. “If we look at Africa or southern parts of Asia, a clear need emerges for equipment protecting power solutions from voltage surges. What you want is less down-time, and you’d want to utilise any mains increases, too.”

At Delta, we have heard the call. Our solution is the SMCS, a.k.a. the Site Monitoring and Control System. The SMCS is designed to be a compact integrated power feeding solution to the telecom base stations with innovative features such as a voltage stabilizer to achieve the best possible power system efficiency over a wide AC voltage range. Also included are an automatic transfer switch between AC utility and genset as well as a healthy phase selector which ensures full power capability in case of phase interruptions in the AC utility network. Moreover the unit has DG health check up logic and a built-in AC distribution panel as well as an alarm panel for easy installation – all integrated into one compact system.

The SMCS also sports a user friendly LCD interface alongside unique protection features and genset fuel saving functionality by sensing battery voltage and shelter temperature. In addition to fuel savings, reduced operating hours of genset lead to longer intervals between maintenance. In short, all this means also longer overall lifetime of the genset.

The SMCS is available either as a standalone version or as a part of systems packages.
11.09.2008 - Six times as cool
Your company has invested in telecom equipment, which you have installed in outdoor power system cabinets. You know that optimum temperature in the cabinets is an essential feature affecting telecom equipment, both operation reliability and expenses.

Traditional methods of climate control include AV (air ventilation with fans and filters), as well as AC (active cooling) and HEX (heat exchanger). All of these cooling options can be used in outdoors solutions.

But – and there is a but – climate control costs, whatever your abbreviation. For the costs to be optimised, modern solutions are needed. A traditional AC solution, for example, will in the long run turn into a significant cost factor.

At Delta we think that where things can be done cheaper they should be. And now they can.
As a solution, Delta now offers two hybrid systems: a combination of air ventilation and active cooling (AV + AC) and a combination of heat exchanger and air ventilation (HEX + AV), revolutionising the cost structure of climate control.

What’s your cut?

How does a hybrid system work, then? In an AV + AC configuration, air ventilation takes care of things as long as the temperature remains low or moderate. Only when the temperature rises does active cooling kick in.

If your operations happen to be in Frankfurt, for instance, where the ambient temperature rises above +25°C a mere 3.71% of the year, this means you can save as much as 83% on energy.

In other words, cooling your system now requires almost six times less energy. No typo there – almost six times less!

“These are significant figures, indeed,” says Andrzej Chaberek, Product Manager at Energy Solutions EMEA & SA Business Unit. “The less the AC unit has to work converts directly into huge savings. This is exactly the kind of benefit we want to give our customers.”

The Frankfurt estimate is based on a typical 1.8 m outdoor cabinet with 1.5 kW heat generated inside, with the target temperature set at +30°C.

“Naturally, if it’s OK for the temperature inside to be higher, the savings are even more dramatic,” Andrzej continues. “Yet with the AC unit inside your cabinet, the system remains protected at all times. It’s a simple yet beautiful solution.”

Hybrid solutions curb capital and operational expenditure

Where purity of air outside the cabinet is a consideration, air ventilation is not an optimal choice. For such circumstances Delta has come up with another hybrid solution, combining heat exchangers with air ventilation.

HEX works as the main cooling unit up to +30°C. The AV kicks in at +20°C, operating periodically to keep the temperature down. If this is not enough, at +30°C the AV goes into continuous operation.

From the cost savings point of view, the good thing about the hybrid setup is that the HEX units can be smaller. If the system creates 1.5 kW of heat, a HEX-only system would require a cooling capacity of 150 W/K.

“With a hybrid setup the capacity can be brought down to 100 or even 75 W/K. This results in cost savings of 10 to 15 per cent!” Mr. Chaberek explains.

Air in such a system will be significantly cleaner, since air from outside is only used for a few percent of annual time.

Life in control

A hybrid solution reduces the need for maintenance which, of course, means further savings. Similarly, cost cuts accumulate since AC operating time in hybrid solutions is relatively low. The need for investment diminishes radically.

There are various options for controlling both hybrid solutions. At their simplest, control duties can be carried out by standard thermal switches.

A far more sophisticated alternative, though, is the PSC 3 power system controller. For advanced system management, the system comes equipped with fan speed regulation as well as state-of-the art monitoring features.

17.06.2008 - Customers talk up Delta
“We are most valued for three things,” says Tuula Tikkanen, HR Manager for the Delta Energy Solutions EMEA & SA business unit. “The professionalism and competence of our customer interface staff, the quality and reliability of our products and our daily customer service operations.”

“All of this makes us very glad, of course, and very proud for our company!”

Delta conducted a customer survey in the first quarter of 2008. The attributes praised by customers are the cornerstones of any successful partnership, and they will be fostered in future as well.

“When we recruit new staff we look for people who want to serve our customers and do things right the first time. Quality consciousness should be an innate property. We test the applicants, and once employed they enter our comprehensive training programme. In fact, last year we exploded our training target by going 173 per cent over!”

Getting better

To make things even better, we have established a new customer support centre within the business unit. The objective of this unit is ‘to collect, correct, confirm and coordinate information between sales and production’. Our customers should benefit from this new centre, with shorter lead times and improved accuracy of delivery.

“Our target is to deliver on time in each case, and we’ve come up with new ways for monitoring and follow-up,” says Demand-Supply Manager Teija Huhta. “We want to help our customers, and we’re extremely happy if they can tell the difference!”

We are eager to make sure we remain at the top our league in future, too, so we shall repeat the survey in 2009, with even better results, we hope.

We wish to thank all our customers who took part in the survey. Please do not hesitate to give us your feedback anytime!
17.06.2008 - Improved powering concept for telecommunications
“Telecommunication infrastructure is always on the look-out for improved energy performance,” says Jorma Autio, Head of Energy Solutions EMEA & SA business unit. “Uninterrupted power is an absolute requirement, but the traditional solutions may be quite power-hungry. We felt we needed to come up with ways to decrease both capital and operating expenses for our customers. The PSC3 controller is one of the results of this process.”

When AC mains power fails, gensets are needed to keep the system operating. Traditionally, all AC devices are connected directly to the AC utility. This means a huge amount of power is needed to start up an entire power range – in fact, the genset needs to be 2–3 times oversized to be able to push through the initial stages.

Size does matter – 30% fuel saving with optimized genset size
“Size costs. It’s simple as that,” says Hans-Peter Glauser, Global Product Manager. “A larger genset means a larger investment. On top of that come the operating expenses. With fuel prices skyrocketing we are all forced to look at ways to decrease fuel consumption”.

Lower fuel consumption also leads to fewer on-site fuelling trips. The cumulative savings are significant.

PSC3 is an intelligent power system control concept enabling a scheduled start-up process. This means the genset can be reduced to half its size, which in turn means that the genset operates at a far better fuel-to-electricity conversion rate.

“PSC3 manages the startup of the rectifiers. The procedure is safe and foolproof,” Glauser explains. “The key factor is optimising the genset size and operating point, which can save up to 30% of fuel during genset operation.”

Safety first
In addition to the scheduled startup process, PSC3 comes with a comprehensive set of features for monitoring the devices on site. It can check the genset operating status, warning the user when fuel or oil levels drop, or if the temperature rises.

“PSC3 can also supervise the site by detecting water, flooding and smoke,” Glauser says. “Lightning protection monitoring and humidity detection are among the many other great features that keep the power system protected, thus maximising reliability in the field.”

A web server is integrated with configuration and monitoring possibilities. Remote monitoring works with modem, LAN or SNMP, and wireless infrastructure is supported as well as fixed-line communication and DSL.
